Question/Problem
What is the difference is between a multi read and a read conflict.
What is a multi read
What is a read conflict
Environment
Carton induction area with barcode scanner.
Answer/Solution
Most Intelligrated conveyor control systems provide for two distinct types of errors that each represent two barcodes being processed potentially for the same item. These two conditions, called 'Read Conflict' and 'Multi-Data' or 'Multi-read' are often confused by users.
The difference between the errors is in the source - which system detects 2 barcodes for one item. In a "read conflict" case, the scanner controller makes the detection, because the scanner trigger eye was blocked only once for two valid codes. The scanner then passes a single distinct "read conflict" message to the conveyor controller. In a "Multi-Data" / "Multi-read" case, the conveyor controller makes the detection, because the induct photoeye was blocked only once, for 2 code messages from the scanner.
Both can be caused by cartons / items that are travelling too close to one another at an induct area of a conveyor system.
