1.            Summary / Overview / Purpose

This article will cover the necessary steps for establishing a connection to a Banner camera vision system.

 

 Problem addressed:

Local users (site personnel) are typically the only way to get connected to a vision system in order to troubleshoot problems regarding item detection. Thus, this prevents tools, such as Wedex®, from using the end users’ PC to troubleshoot the camera.

3.            Procedure / Body

General purpose and use of vision camera based item detection

Typically, the cameras are setup for a “FAIL” condition, meaning that the camera sees an item occupying the surface area of belt or tray. A “PASS” condition, meaning that there was no item detected and the inspected area is reported as unoccupied. Typically, a higher-level controller, in most cases a physical PLC, will monitor the outputs of the camera's vision controller for PASS/FAIL conditions. These topics will be covered in detail below.

Stray Parcel Supervision (SPS)

Manual Induction Stations (MAI)

Dynamic Discharge Compensation (DDC)

 

Getting connected

Once the software is installed on the targeted PC (Windows), insure that the Network Interface Card (NIC) on the PC is configured to be on the same network/subnet as the network that the cameras are operating on. These can be on a public or private local area network (LAN - 192.168.X.X). By default, the controllers are on a 192.168.0.1 IP address.

 

The camera controllers' ethernet port is the point to which the controller will be configured. This can either be a direct PC to controller connection or the controller can be connected to a local switch. Both of these methods will work; however, there is more risk of not being able to communicate to the controller if there are network rules, such as firewalls, configured on the network. Windows firewall has been known to cause issues with camera controller communication and it is best if this is temporarily disabled.

Once the software is installed, the following icon should be available to launch the software:

 

 

Assuming that the installation instructions were followed by the above referenced installation document and that the NIC is configured correctly on the PC attempting to connection the camera/controller the following will populate under "Sensor Neighborhood in the below pop-up window:

Simply select the camera that you desire to communicate with and click "OK" in the bottom left.

 

Troubleshooting

There are four states that the “Availability” column can be in:

             1. Green – YES: Good to connect to camera

            2. Yellow – YES: PresencePLUS can see the camera on the network but cannot connect.

                         i. This is typically a Windows Firewall issue and it should be temporarily disabled.

  3. Red – NO: PresencePLUS can see the camera but the camera is not accepting any connections.

                i. This is typically because there is another PresencePLUS session using the connection.

 4. Blank: PresencePLUS is unable to see any cameras on the network.

 

Once the camera is loaded, the following should demonstrate a general idea of what you should be seeing in PresencePLUS: In this case, an example of an un-occupied tilt-tray sorter carrier with a PASS parameter telling the PLC this carrier is free.

Figure 6 below demonstrates the same camera with a "FAIL" image, demonstrating that the carrier is now occupied.

Note: “Fail” and “Pass” can be used interchangeably in this context. This is completely at the digression of the parties involved with initial deployment and setup.
